It’s been years now since I first heard this advice, but it’s one of the few that stuck with me since the moment it left Pete Everitt’s lips.

One business development task a day.

I have a violent allergic reaction to overly “prescriptive” advice. Some 13-step morning routine, or the “steal my exact outreach script” nonsense. The kind of stuff that worked great for some guy with a totally different business, market, and life than yours, and now they’re preaching it as universal law 🤮

And that’s what I really love about Pete’s advice. It’s specific and measurable enough to be useful (one task for your own business’ needs), but flexible enough to mold around any business.

It’s intentionally versatile.

One business development task could mean sending a quick check-in email to a client you haven’t heard from in a few months, following up on a proposal, or asking for a review. Or it could mean outlining a new recurring service as you completely pivot your business.

Some tasks take five minutes, others could take hours. Some might move the needle a little, others might blow the doors wide open.

The point is that you’re being intentional about doing something every single day that helps move the business forward.

Running a business is often chaotic, frantic, and full of firefighting. The “urgent” has a way of always taking priority over the “important”. It’s easy to go days, weeks, or even months without doing anything to fill your own cup.

But stack hundreds of tasks (even the small ones) across the course of a year and even if you were trying to stagnate your business, you couldn’t.

The compound interest you’ll build over time outperforms any productivity hack — and the best part is, anyone can do it.
