Y’all — Last night, I got the email every one of us dreams of getting:
“You were right.”
A few months ago I fired one of my biggest clients. Even after offers to pay me more to stay.
After they moved on, I really started to second-guess myself….
Was I being stubborn? Was this an ego thing? Should I have just shut up and taken the money?
But their email confirmed exactly what I was afraid of… Their new direction — the one I refused to be a part of — had turned into a disaster. Thousands of dollars and months worth of work wasted.
You’d think that hearing I was right would be vindication… But that felt more like cheering on a train wreak just because you’re not on board.
Saying “no” can be extremely difficult. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t tempted to just do what I was told, if for nothing else but the fist-full of cash.
But this whole saga has been an important reminder that saying “yes” isn’t always being kind… sometimes it’s being complicit.
Integrity matters.
We’re not just building websites, we’re building a reputation.
Unlike a large language model, our job isn’t to take orders. It’s to be leaders — even (and especially) when it’s difficult.
The moment we start worrying more about losing clients than failing them, we’re obsolete.
