I used to think that businesses having “core values” was just corporate fluff. The kind of thing you slap on a break room wall between motivational sayings and OSHA compliance posters.
The overuse of “synergy” never felt genuine or real.
But, over time, I’ve started to change my tune.
The longer I run my business, the more I realize that having clear values can actually make a difference in how you show up and the decisions you make.
But before you roll your eyes and keep scrolling, hear me out. I think there are 3 really valuable takeaways from this:
1. Easier decision making. When you’re at a fork in the road — whether it’s how to handle a tricky client situation, or how you’re going to price your latest offer — values can act like a compass.
Instead of looking at the decision in the abstract, you can run it through the lens of your value systems and ask “What decision best reflects what we stand for?”. Oftentimes, the right answer becomes a lot more obvious.
2. It’s Nearly a Niche. Our industry is doing nothing but becoming more and more competitive. The tools make it easier, the barrier of entry has never been lower, and clients have more choices than ever before. The challenge used to be showing up, and now it’s standing out.
Having clear values — something not a lot of agencies are talking about — is another way to make your agency more memorable and attractive to the right type of client.
3. It Creates Culture. If you’re bringing on help, whether it’s employees or one-off contractors, having clarity on what your business stands for not only helps you identify the right people for your team, but helps give them guardrails on how they should behave and the type of work they are expected to produce.
But even as a company of one, those core values can build resilience by reminding you about your “why” and avoiding burning out feeling like you’re pushing pixels without purpose.
At my agency, I’ve landed on craftsmanship, transparency, and education. Not because I thought those sounded best, but because they are true to who I am and who I want to be.
When you’re actions back them up, they’re more than words. They’re not a slogan, they’re a standard.
Even if you haven’t named them yet, your values are already showing up in the way you work.
Putting them into words just gives you a way to use them on purpose.
