Not “another” year

I love this time of year. Everyone’s hit the reset button over the holidays and has goals, optimism, and the motivation to make this year better than the last.

But maintaining that motivation through the days, weeks, months, and a whole year? It’s not easy.

Your gym — which was packed in January — is down to just the same old guy power-walking in jeans come mid-February.

Once the buzz of the New Year fades, it’s easy to slip back into our old routines. A few months go by, and all those big, exciting goals you set are starting to gather dust. Eventually, they’re buried under a pile of laundry that’s not clean enough to put in the closet but not dirty enough to put in the wash.

But, don’t worry — we’ll dust them off and crack them open come December and say to ourselves “Next year’s the year I’m really going to make this happen”.

Sound familiar? I feel just as attacked as you do 😅

But a new year doesn’t just happen because the calendar resets. It’s only new if we decide to do things different.

We know it’s unsustainable to keep the same level of motivation we have today through the next 365 days. Life is going to happen. Challenges will pop up. There will be days you’re tired, uninspired, or end up 3-hours down a rabbit hole of YouTube videos about restoring antique toasters.

So, what’s the plan for progress once the motivation wears off?

The key is focusing on the why behind your goal.

If you don’t know why you’re chasing a goal, it’s easy to set aside. But if your goal is tied to something meaningful — something bigger than a number on a spreadsheet or a checkbox on your to-do list — it becomes harder to ignore.

Want to double your revenue this year? Why? Is it to provide your family with security? Is it to quit your full time job and go all-in on your agency? Is it to take your kids on that Disney trip you never got to go on as a child?

Why did you list the goal of niching down? Is it because you know you can help more people if you’re focused? Is it to streamline your systems and make work less chaotic?

Your why can keep you moving forward even when the wind isn’t at your back.

It’s the why that will make this a new year, and not just another one.
