A CEO retreat

If you’re like most agency owners, you have a list a mile long of things you want to (or need to) do for your agency, but never seem to find the time.

Looking at your numbers… Putting together a marketing plan… Crafting your next offer…

All of these end up on the back burner over and over again. Not because they’re not important, but because the work our clients send us feels urgent.

“I’ll get to that as soon as I get caught up.” We’ve all said it, right? But how many times have you actually ever been caught up? I can’t think of any.

And that’s exactly why it never gets done.

For years I’ve heard the idea of doing a “CEO Retreat” and thought yeah, I really need to do that… and then never did anything about it.

If you haven’t heard of it before, the concept is simple: a few days away from your office. Out of your normal environment, routine, and daily chaos, dedicated entirely to working on your business instead of in it. No client work. No meetings. Just all the stuff you never seem to find time to prioritize.

One of our TABLE members, Karena, has been doing this since 2018, so asked if I could pick her brain a bit…

It started with an annual trip after reading Michael Hyatt’s Best Year Ever, and she’s since layered in quarterly day-away check-ins after reading Traction.

She recommends three nights: “If you really want to go all in, I think you need a minimum of three nights to be effective. If you make it too long, you come back to too much chaos and immediately feel like you lose momentum.”

The destination isn’t really that important. Just far enough away from your home, office, and all the normal interruptions and excuses. Karena lives in Florida, so she’ll drive a few hours and spend her retreats walking the beach at sunrise and sunset with all the CEO work in between.

She also recommends going in with clear objectives: “You can easily loop in circles when you’re by yourself. Decide ahead of time what you’re going to get done — and go in with a very specific objective to complete.”

There’s no better way to get to the important work than to actually make time for it. And getting away (even if it’s just a hotel in the next town over) is the key to escaping the whirlwind.

I’ve thought this was a great idea for years. 2026 is the year I’m finally putting mine on the calendar. Maybe it should be for you, too?
